Non-Guaranteed Entry Drawing: AWDs intending to run or use a push-rim wheelchair in the TCS New York City Marathon are eligible to apply for entry through the non-guaranteed entry drawing.
Guaranteed Entry: AWDs seeking to claim a guaranteed entry should check the methods of guaranteed entry to determine if they qualify.
AWD Participation Categories
Push-rim Wheelchairs: AWDs intending to use a push-rim wheelchair in the TCS New York City Marathon are eligible to apply for entry through the non-guaranteed entry drawing. A push-rim wheelchair is a racing wheelchair (see photo below) and is the only type of wheelchair permitted on the TCS New York City Marathon course, other than as specified below for Duo Teams. For safety reasons, athletes may not participate using a day chair or other non-racing wheelchair.
The rules applicable to the TCS New York City Marathon prohibit entry by a person who will be pushed or pulled in a wheelchair or stroller by another person or Official Guide unless the person is invited to participate in the 2017 Duo Team Exhibition (details below). To be accepted for entry, applicants planning to use a push-rim wheelchair must be able to propel themselves through the entire course. An Official Guide is permitted to accompany an AWD participant on the course, but the guide may not push or pull the AWD participant.
Ambulatory Athletes with Disabilities: Ambulatory athletes with disabilities intending to run in the TCS New York City Marathon are eligible to apply for entry through the non-guaranteed entry drawing. To be accepted for entry, applicants must be able to propel themselves through the entire course.
Handcycles: Handcycle entrants will not be selected through the non-guaranteed entry drawing. Handcycle athlete applications may be submitted only by persons who have been active members in good standing of Achilles International since October 1, 2016, and whose prior performances or anticipated finish time indicates that they will not complete the TCS New York City Marathon course in a time faster than 1 hour and 35 minutes. Achilles and New York Road Runners will identify and select the total number of handcycle entrants from the pool of qualified applicants, and these entrants will be notified of their acceptance. Therefore, handcycle applicants should not make travel, hotel, or other arrangements for the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon until they are notified of their acceptance.
Duo Teams: New York Road Runners is excited to offer a Duo Team Exhibition at the TCS New York City Marathon. NYRR is conducting a drawing to identify those duo teams that will be invited to participate in the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon.
Please review the 2017 Duo Team Participation Terms and Conditions and General Needed Information form. This link provides additional information and the requirements that must be agreed to by the two team members. To be considered for this event, each team member must complete the relevant portions of the General Needed Information form and return it to [email protected], along with a photo of the racing wheelchair that the team plans to use, should the team be selected. The General Needed Information form and required racing wheelchair photo must be submitted by February 17, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. ET to be considered for the drawing. The drawing to select the invited teams will be conducted on March 2, 2017. For further information, please email [email protected].
Any accepted AWD who requires a guide must obtain and/or register the guide through Achilles International. A guide may accompany the AWD, but may not push, pull, or carry a push-rim wheelchair, handcycle, or ambulatory athlete through the course. Please view further information about guide responsibilities.
